Ravadinovo Castle, officially named "In Love with the Wind" (В любов с вятъра), sits about 5 km from Sozopol, in the village of Ravadinovo. It is one of the easiest half-day trips you can make from the coast, and one of the most photographed places in the Burgas region. This guide covers what the castle is, what to see, opening hours, tickets, and how to get there from Sozopol.
What is Ravadinovo Castle?
Despite its medieval look, Ravadinovo is not an old castle. It is a private project started in 1996 by Bulgarian businessman Georgi Tumpalov, who set out to build a castle by hand. Three decades later the work is still going on, so part of what you see is an active building site rather than a finished monument.
The castle is built from around 20,000 tons of local limestone and marble quarried near the Black Sea coast. The stone contains tiny mineral traces that catch the light, so the walls shift in tone through the day — pale in the morning, warmer at midday, and golden near sunset. This is why the site is popular with photographers and for weddings.
What to see at the castle
The visit is mainly about the grounds, which take about an hour to walk. Inside the complex you will find:
- Stone towers, arched galleries and a drawbridge
- Formal gardens with fountains, roses and trimmed hedges
- A lake with swans and a small chapel
- A small animal park with peacocks and other birds
- A winery on site, where you can taste local wine
In summer the castle also hosts knight shows and other events. Access to the grounds and gardens is always included; access to the interior rooms can vary, so check on arrival if that matters to you.
Opening hours and tickets
Ravadinovo Castle is open daily, usually from 09:00 to 18:00, with longer hours in high summer. Adult tickets are inexpensive — around 20 leva — with reduced prices for children. Prices and hours change from season to season, so confirm on the official site (ravadinovo.bg) before you go. Plan for about one to one and a half hours on the grounds.
How to get to Ravadinovo from Sozopol
The castle is roughly 5–6 km from the old town of Sozopol, so getting there is simple:
- By car: about 10–15 minutes on the road toward Burgas. There is free parking at the entrance.
- By taxi: 10–15 minutes; taxis are easy to find in Sozopol.
- On foot: around one hour if you want a walk of about 5 km.
There is no regular bus to Ravadinovo village, so a car or taxi is the practical choice.
Tips for your visit
The best months are April to October, when the gardens are in bloom. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for softer light and fewer people. Bring water and comfortable shoes, as the grounds are large and mostly outdoors. The castle pairs well with a walk around Sozopol old town on the same day, since both are close together.
